truly amazing times

we really do live in amazing times.  i’ve mentioned here before how i wished my first political boss, clif white was still around.  the stories he told about the smoked-filled rooms and the trailers on the floor of the past conventions were reminders of the true craft of politics.  and  one, regardless of partisan standing has to be impressed to live at this moment in history when the first african-american candidate is running for highest offiice in the land.  last night’s acceptance speech, although ostenaious was brillant stagecraft.   and now today senator mccain showing a real understanding of what’s at stake by selecting gov. sarah palin to be his running mate.  amazing stuff.  just heard on fox news a conversation with newt gingrich when back in april he offered the name of gov. palin as a “interesting prospect” for conisderation as vp.  newt is pretty smart.  i remember going through some of clif’s papers after his death and finding a letter written to him by a professor newt gingrich.  he was then a professor political science.  that document was written in the late 70′s…as i read it, in the spring of ’93, it was clearly the foundation of newt’s arguements for what came to be known as the “contract with America” which is credited with the re-writing of the federal welfare programs.    fun stuff.

it was interesting too tonite to hear sen. obama distance himself from the hairtrigger response that was sent out earlier today.  apparently the campagin in chicago fired off a quick memo that was a put down of gov. palin’s pick.  those machine reactions are just one reason why i bailed from the political process.  despite my philosphoical disagreements with sen. obama i am very impressed with his character and his quick response today to welcome gov. palin to battle. oh for more common sense debate in the public square.  to push the “king makers” out of their places so that we can have a healthy debate about the interests of the nation.  fun stuff this is. stay tuned… the next 68 days are going to be really interesting.  its about time.

this week’s party…my ramblings

picture-5-300x167.pngi’ve got to admit my more than passing interest in the political conventions that are and will be occupying our lives over these next couple of weeks. having spent some time engaged as an operative of sorts for the ’92 and ’96 campaign cycles i’ll be watching (fox news of course). beyond the obvious partisanship i’m reminded the value that these events afford, but also can’t help but wonder and wrestle with the real impact. one thing i learned today was the change of venue that will be afforded to the current convention when they move from the pepsi center in denver to invesco field so as to afford a much larger venue.  in principle i probably would have pushed for that kind of opportunity, but the cost of such a move is…at least in some sense offensive.  it seems the political process has been and still is about money and its influence.

i do find it interesting that obama hasn’t seen the bounce that he should have.  and i also think that in some circles a major reason for the funk can be found in the uncertianity that the broad 80% of voters just aren’t sure, and the civil forum from out at saddelback (godtube has the whole forum here) several weeks ago helped to further the distincion.  pastor rick said it on the front end, and it rings true…a world view matters.

picture-4-300x167.pngmy partianship aside and my disagreement over how to spend the money, the process that we’re watching is important.  it is the very best that is available to a free people.  and this process is vital to the health of the republic.  america is founded on a two party system.  the constrating of ideals in the public square is huge also.  But we are at a new day i think.  watching senator kennedy hand off his 46 year baton was impressive tonite.  though i would disagree with him on many fronts, i am grateful as a earthly citizen that he and others  who aspire to public office have taken on that mantel.

i’ll get my political fix these next couple of days, but i’ll also offer pondering this process i’m even more passionate about my call and place in the Kingdom as part of an incredible team at newhope where we are living out the great commission to reach and teach, literally the world for Jesus.

field of faith and green thumb

there’s alot to write about.   much good work is taking place on a number of fronts.  hence my silence here.  most recently is a series of meetings with some great heart students and adult about a community event that could have a huge impact for the Kingdom.  Its been a huge blessing to cast a vision with these folks and then to step back and watch.  the momentuem for this was birthed out of the community’s participation in one service last month.  several conversations with some local adults and “happening” upon an ad about fields of faith has created a forward momentuem of growing a Kingdom presence that hasn’t really been seen before.  tonite was the third meeting in the past 10 days.  many new faces that truly added to the desired outcome.  there’s about 53 days til this event.  it will be interesting to see what ultimately happens in Redbird stadium on the 8th of October.  This much i know…God will show up. The energy is growing for fields of faith on TwitPicI’m learning alot about myself in this whole process too.  Leadership is always about the learning.  The stretch is to shape a common vision and then release it to see how it will be implemented and even improved on.  like tonite as we planned one of the students realized that SYATP is 2 weeks before…and that it would be useful to gather students for a presence at their flagpole.  interesting note…they’ve never done that before here.  so the whole conversation moves to a new level.  one of the adults came up to me tonite and shared how they are just blown away by where a small desire can move to if you allow God to shape it.  stay tuned.  check back here as we continue to plan like it depends on us and pray like it depends on God.

on a more fun note…i picked the elderberries last night and rose and i stemmed them today…actually got 12 pts put up last nite and another 13 today.  that work always means summer is wrapping up.  and btw the house smells great as rose is cooking down her home grown tomatoes.  last night at dinner we had our eats from that good effort…freshly picked lettuce, tomatoes and green beans. Really love this time of year when we get blessed with rose’s green thumb.
