happy birthday john!

Picture 7“However many blessings we expect from God, His infinite liberality will always exceed all our wishes and our thoughts.”  ~john calvin

today is the 500th anniversary of john calvin’s birthday.  the good folks over at logos have setup  a pretty cool website with all sorts of useful informaiton here.

on the logos blog this morning they remind us…

Many who disagree with his theology still regard him as a gift to the church. John Wesley called him “a great instrument of God,” and Jacob Arminius considered Calvin “incomparable in the interpretation of Scripture” and recommended Calvin’s commentaries second only to the Bible itself. So learning and benefiting from Calvin isn’t just for the five pointers.

whatever your theological position, its clear that calvin through his keen intellect helped to shape much of how the church pushed through the reformation.  given our cultural mess, it might be time to take and revisit his thinking.  beyond the website, logos is offering a free download of the institutes and 11 more books.  check ‘em out.

staying faith against the odds – rudy

emmah, mitch and kaitlyn work on a recycling bin in front of harambee

the past couple of summer’s some good hearted students and i have made the trek out to socal…both times we’ve dropped in on an urban ministry there in pasadena called harambee .  their former director, rudy carrasco has moved on to “G-rap” as he says they say there.  he’s got a short piece in youthworker journal reminding us…

Urban youth workers must have faith. “The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it,” Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians 5:24. God loves our young people more than we do. I extend this word of encouragement to you, as well as to myself. I’ve invested a lot in a young man named Jose, who currently is sliding downhill. There are days I think—and feel—his situation is hopeless.

an important reminder to any of us doing ministry…we’ve got to stay in it…

unconventional method: state of the church online

UM_Logoone of my pet avocations is the gathering of good technology for the purpose of furthering the Kingdom. If you have a few minutes (10-15) whether you’re a techno geek or a casual observer,  please jump over here and complete either the general or church leader survey. the effort is being led by Monk Development, Tangle.com, Church Community Builder, MemberHub, Unifyer.

and stay tuned for the summary and results…thanks!
