the beauty of community-our pain connects us

To Write Love on Her Arms (@TWLOHA) is an amazing organization with an amazing mission.  so its so cool to have rolling stone choose them to do a story.  here’s a cool video from what some says is ” more than a photo shoot…an expression of hope.”  so cool to hear the “why” of those that came to be supportive.  their pain and brokenness connects them to a larger community that is now a movement.  so cool.

but seriously… a reminder that this day was officially set for our nation by president lincoln.  a clip from the closing paragrah of the thanksgiving proclamation on oct 3, 1863…

And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

may we live in the charge of this challenge.  you can read the whole proclamation herepraying your thanksgiving is blessed!

marriage: love and war.

together, my bride melinda and i have been talking alot about marriage.  not ours directly, but we have reflected on it, but on the state of marriage in our spiritual community. whether we look at those she and i walk with, students, or even the adults in our small group, it is amazing to us the ongoing assaults that continue to roll towards this blessed state. it seems almost paradoxical that in the midst of a teaching series…40 days of love, that the destruction of love is in every camp in which we walk and live.

it seems very timely that my pal john eldredge and his bride stasi have written a book that takes the message of freedom and offers to the most challenged institution in the world.

together they offer a reminder that marriage is an amazing tension… rich & good and hard . so grateful for them to have taken on this task.  the book is due out on december 15th.

got your sword and shield?

stumbled on this video this morning from j-rob productions…(love finding gems via twitter).  seems appropriate as we start a new week.  personally i needed to be reminded of this today.  there is alot of battle going on our outpost.  every weekend it seems another family is coming under attack.  it seems everywhere i look…with my students, with my adult leaders with members in the church, hearts are being assaulted.   the reminder of this video is encouraging.  don’t leave home without your sword and shield.
