fearless by max lucado

fearless, like much of what max lucado writes is very good.  the book is filled with many good stories that help to paint clearly how we tend to deal with fear, but he also helps the reader to see that there exists a perspective that we need to work towards if we are going to live lives of wholeness.

Lucado reminds us in his story-telling voice that there are many agreements we make about our selves that is very far from the truth.  So many people believe that they are abandoned to their plight and just have to work through it.  early on lucado unpacks a  key understanding of how God deals with our fears.   Helping us to debunk what is a false understanding of our place in the Story.  A key observation about fear…”if it is mismanaged,(fear)leads to sin.  Sin leads to hiding.  Since we’ve all sinned, we all hide, not in the bushes (as our first parents) but in eighty-hour work weeks, temper tantrums and religious busyness.  We avoid contact with God.”

Lucado walks through many concepts of fear…God is ticked of at us, we’re not doing enough to protect our kids, our economic uncertianties, and the final idea…what do we do if things get worse?  all very real and all ideas that many have or even now wrestling through.

the good thing is that Lucado helps us see that those ideas can be looked at from a radically new way if we simply grow in our love of Jesus.  I love the quote he pulls a story from  Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis…

Lucy sees Aslan, the lion, for the first time in many years.  He has changed since their last encounter.  His size surprsies her, and she tells him as much.
‘Aslan’ said Lucy ‘you’re bigger.’
‘That is because you are older, little one,’ answered he.
‘not because you are?’
‘I am not.  But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

And so it is with Christ.  The longer we live in him, the greater he becomes in us.  It’s not that he changes butw that we do.; we see more of him.  We see dimensions, apsects, and characteristics we never saw before, increasing and astonishing increments of his purity, power, and uniqueness.

Lucado’s book is written with useful discussion questions for each chapter at the back of the book and would be an excellent small group study.  The good folks at thomas nelson have also put together a few useful webtools to impact the message.  You’ll want to check them out.

I was encouraged as i finished the book.  My take away was when we see our God as a big God then our strength can overcome fear.  I need to leave my small views behind and watch how God will use those elements of fear…those things we fear to help us trust Him more so that like little Lucy our view of God will grow and our fears disappear…because we grow.

Great Read!  Get it.

wired-mansfield

wiredour mother ship, berean baptist church put on a large addition about 18 months ago.  one element was a new youth area.  since may of last year scott finn a volunteer has lead the effort to create  a music venue for mostly indie bands called wired. for the last 15 months, almost every other weekend wired has hosted three – four young bands.  it has grown to become one of the best things that north central ohio has to offer high school and college students as a healthy, enjoyable place to connect on the weekends.  recently they hosted everyday sunday for their newest cd release…best night of our lives.

this past weekend was the finals of the 2009 ultimate talent challenge. i got a chance to serve as judge.  although i’m not a musician by any stretch, i do appreciate those that take the craft seriously.  so it was so cool  to see 5 young bands from screamo to ballad to punk to rock and roll  take the craft seriously and engage.  here’s video wrap-up.

xgames3d-what if “it” is possible

so em and i hit up the 12:01 am show of xgames 3D.  we got to the theater…(em drove).  actually i bought our tickets online just to make sure we’d get them without any hassle.  we pulled in to the parking lot…about 11:35pm.  hmmm…lots of cars…retrieve the tickets from the atm…go and stand in line.  dang…long line.  glad we got here early.  lots of commotion.  11:57pm the ticket taker takes our tickets and says…last door on the left.  we walk past the entire line of folks and realize they are all there for an entirely different movie..REALLY?  so we get to the last door and we ended up having the entire theater to ourselves.  amazing.  xgames 3d is a great flick.  lots of leadership principles on taking risk and staying in the mix.  there are several amazing stories of these amazing atheletes staying in the competition..even with a broken foot or almost a concussion, and yet because of the one opportunity to push themselves and their peers to a whole new level..they stay in it.   in the midst of an incredible 3d experience…and just a lot of amazing eye candy video…there’s some things to take away.

ricky carmichael makes the statement:

in those moments when most people say…

i can’t …

they say…self perservation

they say “what if”… (you might get hurt?)

we say…what if…the other way…what if “it”… is possible?

xgames3d is worth the time. and btw if you click on the link above and then click on media tab you’ll find 3 songs from the soundtack as a gift from the good folks at ESPN.

also it was really fun to see kyle loza practicing in the shadow of saddleback church…and you’ll want to check out kyle’s web presence here.    fun stuff.  oh yeah…this playing for only 1 week.  don’t miss it.

take your best shot…God wants to use you.

hanging at the pdym-slc - parker, austin, emmah and adam

last summer while at the student leadership conference at saddleback we had the chance to hangout with alot of cool folks – one person in particular was austin gutwein.  austin is a humble guy.  yet he’s had a huge impact on so many in his short life and the impact just keeps growing.  most recently he has completed his first book …take your best shot… scheduled for release in early september.

tybsaustin joined us for a skype conversation during the dare2serve mission trip in june.  had a great conversation with our students.  you can watch it
here.

here’s the promo video for the book.  so cool.

here’s my take on the book…take your best shot is a great read.  many good stories about finding your place in God’s Story.  what makes the books so good is that its “just” a story about a pretty typically “normal kid”.  but as austin admits he’s gotten “swept along on an adventure that’s totally abnormal.”  something he hadn’t planned on at all.  and its out of that honesty that the book is a real encouragement to seeing how God can use the humble heart of anyone.  The core for me is the reminder from austin that the adventure that we are all called to be a part of looks like this…

  • we realize the world actually does not revolve around us
  • we realize that we only have one life to live, only one chance to make it count.
  • we start off by focusing on who we are rather than what we do.
  • we discover that doing something bigger than ourselves begins with Someone bigger than ourselves
  • we do a major motivation check.
  • we embrace our own passions and adopt our own purposes.
  • we are willing to dream big and act small.
  • we partner with others who are going in similar directions.
  • we prepare for desertion, opposition, and distraction.
  • we celebrate like crazy when cool things happen around us.
  • we willingly join this group of people who are taking their best shot and doing things that are bigger thant themselves.

take your best shot is a book that everyone will enjoy.  students – to help them see that they truly have something to offer and the world is just waiting for them to act…and adults  – realizing they have something to offer our youth.. that we see how important it is to risk in the ideas, heart and passion of those around us…whether our own children or youth at church.   the quote from abraham lincoln near the end of the book that sums it all up ” in the end, its not the years in your life that count. it’s the life in your years.”
