derek webb… breaking the rules over skubala…garbage?

derek @ #nymc09-columbus, ohio

derek webb on stage at #nymc09 in columbus, oh

got this email this morning from derek webb

friends-
i haven’t sent many personal emails to this email list but we’re in a situation that has gotten a little out of control and it’s time to fill you in. as some of you may know, i’ve been working for months on my new record, ‘stockholm syndrome’, which i’ve recently finished and turned in to the record label. they’ve been very supportive over the years, but this time we didn’t get the response we expected. it seems i’ve finally found the line beyond which my label can support me, and apparently i’ve crossed it.

i consider this my most important record and am adamant about all of you hearing it. we had originally hoped to have ‘stockholm syndrome’ out this month (next week even), but at this point we’re not sure when the record will come out and in what form. the majority of the controversy is surrounding one song, which i consider to be among the most important songs on the record. so we’ve decided it’s an appropriate time to break the rules.

but because of various legal/publishing issues we’re having to be rather careful with how we do what we’re going to do next. that’s really all i can say for now and i’ve probably said too much.

we have a plan and we’re moving ahead, but we’re not sure what kind of trouble we might be getting into. we’ll let you know as soon as we know our next move-
derek

i’m not sure what the uproar is, but its not surprising…always happens when ideas get pushed… derek performed at the recent national youth ministry conference in columbus and was raw and transparent as they come…he was excellent.

scott mcclellan at collide magazine did really good interview with derek about a year ago…that’s worth the time.

yep…culture war it is… if the buzz is correct, its all about an certain word…skubala in the greek it was considered very impolite… “refuse,” “garbage,” “human excrement,” “crud,” and “crap”. it comes from a literal translation of phillippians 3:8

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage*, so that I could gain Christ

*the polite word. interesting stuff.

seismos? 2

seismos2

its taken a few days to find some time to update on the rest of the conversation we had at seismos?.  seismos i’m grateful to joel daniel harris for following his heart and pulling together this conversation.  personally, i learn so much from these kind of gatherings.  17 folks….9 denominations…15 churches ~ big & little …traditional folks and contemporary too.  i’m not going to repeat the good work that joel daniel harris has put together (he’s the guy on the left with the mac on his lap).  he served us well as scribe facilitator.  you can read his posts here…

who we are
the questions we asked
inquiry and youthministry 1.0

for me the take away was more about asking larger questions about how we are doing things in our own context.  there was a great conversation about the issues we all face because of the cultural context we work in.  the economy, the state of the family, the fear of change, and even the fear of failure all helped to focus our attention on how the church is called to be the Light to the darkness.  i was grateful for being asked into the conversation.  one voice that i was able to offer was on the side of the practical…particularly the use of technology to better focus our efforts and results.  i’ll share that list later.

another observation for me comes from the reality that many of the issues we are pushing through in student minsitry are simply micros of the larger issue confronting the church along with the reality that we live in a day similar to the 1st century world.  the “religious” fears its loss of control and the uncertainity of allowing free and open conversation about where we go from here.
