truly amazing times

we really do live in amazing times.  i’ve mentioned here before how i wished my first political boss, clif white was still around.  the stories he told about the smoked-filled rooms and the trailers on the floor of the past conventions were reminders of the true craft of politics.  and  one, regardless of partisan standing has to be impressed to live at this moment in history when the first african-american candidate is running for highest offiice in the land.  last night’s acceptance speech, although ostenaious was brillant stagecraft.   and now today senator mccain showing a real understanding of what’s at stake by selecting gov. sarah palin to be his running mate.  amazing stuff.  just heard on fox news a conversation with newt gingrich when back in april he offered the name of gov. palin as a “interesting prospect” for conisderation as vp.  newt is pretty smart.  i remember going through some of clif’s papers after his death and finding a letter written to him by a professor newt gingrich.  he was then a professor political science.  that document was written in the late 70′s…as i read it, in the spring of ’93, it was clearly the foundation of newt’s arguements for what came to be known as the “contract with America” which is credited with the re-writing of the federal welfare programs.    fun stuff.

it was interesting too tonite to hear sen. obama distance himself from the hairtrigger response that was sent out earlier today.  apparently the campagin in chicago fired off a quick memo that was a put down of gov. palin’s pick.  those machine reactions are just one reason why i bailed from the political process.  despite my philosphoical disagreements with sen. obama i am very impressed with his character and his quick response today to welcome gov. palin to battle. oh for more common sense debate in the public square.  to push the “king makers” out of their places so that we can have a healthy debate about the interests of the nation.  fun stuff this is. stay tuned… the next 68 days are going to be really interesting.  its about time.

this week’s party…my ramblings

picture-5-300x167.pngi’ve got to admit my more than passing interest in the political conventions that are and will be occupying our lives over these next couple of weeks. having spent some time engaged as an operative of sorts for the ’92 and ’96 campaign cycles i’ll be watching (fox news of course). beyond the obvious partisanship i’m reminded the value that these events afford, but also can’t help but wonder and wrestle with the real impact. one thing i learned today was the change of venue that will be afforded to the current convention when they move from the pepsi center in denver to invesco field so as to afford a much larger venue.  in principle i probably would have pushed for that kind of opportunity, but the cost of such a move is…at least in some sense offensive.  it seems the political process has been and still is about money and its influence.

i do find it interesting that obama hasn’t seen the bounce that he should have.  and i also think that in some circles a major reason for the funk can be found in the uncertianity that the broad 80% of voters just aren’t sure, and the civil forum from out at saddelback (godtube has the whole forum here) several weeks ago helped to further the distincion.  pastor rick said it on the front end, and it rings true…a world view matters.

picture-4-300x167.pngmy partianship aside and my disagreement over how to spend the money, the process that we’re watching is important.  it is the very best that is available to a free people.  and this process is vital to the health of the republic.  america is founded on a two party system.  the constrating of ideals in the public square is huge also.  But we are at a new day i think.  watching senator kennedy hand off his 46 year baton was impressive tonite.  though i would disagree with him on many fronts, i am grateful as a earthly citizen that he and others  who aspire to public office have taken on that mantel.

i’ll get my political fix these next couple of days, but i’ll also offer pondering this process i’m even more passionate about my call and place in the Kingdom as part of an incredible team at newhope where we are living out the great commission to reach and teach, literally the world for Jesus.

a long and trying day…

God\'s promises

saw this rainbow on my way to a townhall meeting at our wooster campus tonite.  it was a great blessing, as a reminder of to God’s faithfulness.  today was filled with lots of mixed emotions and a few assaults against our hearts.  i’ll write more later, but right now, the jedster is hanging out with 14 other young men from this area as he steps out on this next chapter of his/our life.  today was messey.  yet God’s truth prevails and i am encouraged beyond belief.  blessings all.

ooorah! another chapter…maybe even two.

a pix of the family including \the past week or so has been full. mostly in the celebration of the jedster’s graduation and his stepping of as a soon to be u.s. marine. we’ve packed a lot in these final days. a great open house for family and friends. the jedster actually getting his driver’s license. of course it took two attempts and because he was heading off to boot camp they gave him a waiver to take the test again the next day. so during the twenty four hours between the tests we spent a few hours working on the whole turning thing. seems he made his turns to wide for the likes of the examiner. he had the road driving down, but those turns take a littlejed and some of his crew chillin more finesse. it caused me some pause to think through how to teach the proper way. driving becomes quickly a second nature almost involuntary process that i had to force myself to watch how i turned corners so i could relay the process. it makes sense why they require minors some 50 hours of driving to get the license. but he got it. last night he drove me to mansfield to do some shopping. we took our urban assualt mancar (gmc suburban) for the ride. he did well.

the recruiter and the recruiteei’ve been thinking a lot about how we’ve raise our children. and in both cases the two grads decided to step off in amazing ways. the oldest lived abroad as a rotary exchange student in the paris region of france. she left the august before her sr. year and stayed abroad until the following july. the son steps off in just a few short days to boot camp for 13 weeks and then home and then back at it, with an enlistment of four years.

it was real delight to see various friends and classmates stop by and wish him the best as he makes this next step. i know he was moved by the whole thing, but he kept his cool. i was blessed as good friends who we don’t see regularly made a trek to our home to offer words of encouragement and congratulations. thinking about memoriesmelinda did an amazing job of pulling the meal together. the menu included pulled pork, wings, ribs and some beef. those that came blessed us with great treats too. we’ve got several more things planned as a family before we take him to the processing station and then see him off. we’d welcome your prayers of protection and blessing on him as he moves forward (and for us at home to move to a new place in our relationship ourselves.

thanks.

kay warren on leadership

you may remember a few weeks back, chazzdaddy and i spent some time on the west coast for the pd summit. one of the briefings we were part of was a late afternoon conversation with kay warren about how the church could impact the global hiv/aids crisis. (www.hivandthechurch.com)

today i had the chance to spend about 40 minutes on a webinar with kay herself and few others (like 4) talking about the “how to” of an outreach ministry to those impacted by hiv/aids. i love kay’s heart for this stuff. we heard her last summer at the slc ’07 and it was great. kay is real, just as real as her best friend and husband so it was an extended blessing to chat for awhile. i’ve done alot of this webinar things, but never one quite as good as todays. one take away on leadership i’d like to share…and i think i’ve got his right, kay said…”leadership is about taking (our) people where they don’t know they can go“. sounds like a good title to a book. i’ve seen alot of that lately. folks who are being asked to step up and they do and all of sudden they realize they’re impacting others for the kingdom. very encouraging stuff.

got to admit that getting to the call was little bit of a journey. first on their end they had to change the time, which then created a issue on mine. so i decided to take the call at home and thought i’d use skype to do the phone part. first i couldn’t get it connected because i couldn’t key the code quick enough before it would time out then i had to run and grab emmah from the bus. but even being a little late, kay was gracious to invite me in to the conversation. just another step into the larger story. fun stuff.
