absent.

excited for the conversation that this documentary is provoking. ABSENT by the guy who did the story on american meth, justin hunt.  i’ve seen this in my own work.  for the past 10 years i’ve walked alongside some 100 young men through our local juvenile justice system..and the thread that runs through all of their stories is a father who is absent: physically and/or emotionally.  and like those young men the stories in this documentary are unsettling similar…absent dads.  justin draws on the life stories of a varied cast: a rock star- Metallica frontman James Hetfield, an author – John Eldredge  and several others.

the reality of the Resurrection

it was an amazing Resurrection morning at the outpost. serving as part of the team that shared the story of God to the Rescue with some 80 children… much excitement as they tried to process what the true meaning of Easter is all about.  and yet for those of us who are older…perhaps this nails it more precisely…

catch a grenade on holy saturday

every week for the past couple of months i’ve picked up a group of young men who are all freshman in high school to take to evo student ministry. and as it turns out, they’ve ended up in my small group each week…i’ve really grown to love who they are.  they have amazing talents and have open hearts and minds.  for the most part they’re still on a journey to figure out who Jesus is.  one of the hallmarks of our weekly roadtrip, since its about about 20 minute commute to the outpost, is their plugging in their ipods and listening through a dozen or so songs from artists like lil’ wayne and justin beiber.  one song that totally captures them is the song grenade  by bruno mars. its a lot of fun to hear them all singing their best voices to this contemporary songs. i’m thinking this rendition by the guys at Kennsington…puts its meaning in a whole new light.  amazing.

We forget…

Celebrating the brutality of the Cross at Evo Student Ministry this week

saw a post on facebook from the spiritual director of my walk to emmaus…pastor mike was sharing about his working today on a message for good friday from the perspective of someone who watched first hand the events of Good Friday unfold some 2,000 years ago.  pastor mike revealed that he was overcome with emotion as he realized that…

We forget the followers didn’t know about Easter on Good Friday.

and in that understanding i realized this week that there are many, even in this modern day, even in a local church, who don’t know the Story of the Passion of the Christ. As we shared that story this week at EVO I too am overwhelmed by the weight of what Jesus did for me…and my responsibility to lead others to the Cross so that they will have an understanding of the hope that comes because of what Jesus did and embrace the work of Christ for themselves.

offensive hope and lady gaga

saw this on The Blog of Lisa Colón DeLay I had mentioned in my message in big church a few weeks ago the impact of lady gaga and her newest work, born that way in todays culture.

i had calculated that her song had been viewed literally every second since it had been posted on youtube over 6 weeks ago (some 25 million+). similarly the same song was downloaded more than 1.2 million times on itunes on the day it was released.

what i found really interesting and lisa goes after the same question about gaga’s reaction to a get out of hell card that a guy gave her while headed to a concert. the part of the video you want to watch begins at 2:20 goes til about 5:00. its worth the watch. be warned its straight up kind of talk so don’t be offended. if there is any offense taken it should be by how she was spoken to by this guy who was trying to suggest he had eternal hope to offer her. she asks several insightful questions and the guy on the street probably missed an incredible opportunity to truly offer her Hope.

i’m wondering if he had approached her in a more loving manner what her response might have been. it may explain why our culture is slipping from its Judeo-Christian roots. and why Gaga’s song resonates with so many youth (and adults) today.  it maybe that some Christians really need to be quiet for Christ’s sake.  How would you have responded if Lady Gaga had approached you?
