last night, melinda and i made a short trip north to riverview church to hear john eldredge talk on his most recent work, Fathered by God…which is the condensed version of Way of The Wild Heart.
It focuses specifically on how God fathers us through the masculine journey. The Way of The Wild Heart talks about the role of fathering our children as well. john was, as always engaging & entertaining…love his sense of humor. one fun point came early on when talking about the “cowboy” stage of the journey. he shared about this relatively new phenomenon hitting the outdoors (although doing some googling its seems its been around in some way officially since ’01) called MUnicycling…a mountain-unicycle. (check out these links) talk about adventure! i guess its safer than mountain biking because the speed is dependent on the peddler…but still… so here’s a quick side bar on a guy, my age having much adventure. amazing stuff. i’m glad john affirmed that through the stages (boy–>cowboy–>warri0r–>lover–>king–>sage) of the masculine journey are sort of unique to a certain time in a man’s life, but there are moments and seasons when a 50 year old can still be the cowboy. not sure i want to take up the art, but it looks impressive. i’ll share a little more later about some of the take away from john’s talk. btw, he’s just starting the tour…head over to www.fatheredbygod.com to see if he’ll be close by. it is worth the time.
