back in may i posted (which has landed more searches on my blog than anything else i’ve posted since i started blogging a few years ago) about some mystery around derek webb’s new ablum. here’s the single (ht mike todd) that appears to be creating part of the uneasiness. you can gain some more insight here from bryan allain. all very interesting. i’m thinking there’s a theme developing here today…let’s all…as Christ followers wrestle with what does matter more?

Update://stephen lamb was at a gathering saturday july 4th (an appropriate date), at The Rutledge in nashville where Derek Webb played a one hour documentary on the making of this new album…you can read about the evening here. i’m wondering if we really are at a new place in the Story? stay tuned. btw you can pre-order derek webb’s new work -the stockholm syndrome on tuesday 7/7. watch his website for more info.

got this email this morning from derek webb…

friends-
i haven’t sent many personal emails to this email list but we’re in a situation that has gotten a little out of control and it’s time to fill you in. as some of you may know, i’ve been working for months on my new record, ‘stockholm syndrome’, which i’ve recently finished and turned in to the record label. they’ve been very supportive over the years, but this time we didn’t get the response we expected. it seems i’ve finally found the line beyond which my label can support me, and apparently i’ve crossed it.

i consider this my most important record and am adamant about all of you hearing it. we had originally hoped to have ‘stockholm syndrome’ out this month (next week even), but at this point we’re not sure when the record will come out and in what form. the majority of the controversy is surrounding one song, which i consider to be among the most important songs on the record. so we’ve decided it’s an appropriate time to break the rules.

but because of various legal/publishing issues we’re having to be rather careful with how we do what we’re going to do next. that’s really all i can say for now and i’ve probably said too much.

we have a plan and we’re moving ahead, but we’re not sure what kind of trouble we might be getting into. we’ll let you know as soon as we know our next move-
derek

i’m not sure what the uproar is, but its not surprising…always happens when ideas get pushed… derek performed at the recent national youth ministry conference in columbus and was raw and transparent as they come…he was excellent.

scott mcclellan at collide magazine did really good interview with derek about a year ago…that’s worth the time.

yep…culture war it is… if the buzz is correct, its all about an certain word…skubala in the greek it was considered very impolite… “refuse,” “garbage,” “human excrement,” “crud,” and “crap”. it comes from a literal translation of phillippians 3:8

Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage*, so that I could gain Christ

*the polite word. interesting stuff.
