As Team EVO we’ve been out talking to various groups about the reality of modern-day slavery as we prep for the upcoming 500 mile Freedom Tour Bike Ride. For many its seems like something that happens in other places and in those places that are far away. but this story that broke this morning paints a picture that is disturbing right here in the US. Modern Day slavery isn’t only about forced labor in a third world country…its also very much about prostitution here and abroad. And it makes our effort for the Freedom Tour all the more understandable. Also very disturbing that by estimates more than 100,000 teens are lured into prostitution nationwide annually. I agree with my friend Adam that the author of this post consistently refers to 13-17 year olds as kids and children. That person might need a lesson in developmental psychology. It is a new day.
Operation Cross Country is part of the FBI’s Innocence Lost National Initiative which was started in 2003. With 47 task forces and working groups, the FBI says more than 2,200 children have been pulled off the streets along with more than 1,000 convictions of people exploiting kids. According to the FBI, many of the convictions have resulted in long prison sentences, including eight life terms.
