Visual Servants – Photojournalists – My Journey

studentandbike

a “timeless” image I captured while riding recenty with a student friend through the woods…

those that know me know that i love to tell stories through the visual…my students are always giving me a hard time for taking a picture or capturing video of life’s moments.  i was saddened to learn that the Chicago Sun-Times has decided to eliminate its entire staff of some 30 seasoned photojournalists.  Including 35 year vetern photojournalistic icon and pulitzer prize winner,  John H White.  This short CCN video is worth the watch.  I find it sad too that the interview with him was abruptly cut short…fitting though as so to so has his amazing career.  Praying the beauty of our internet/webwoven world will still allow his craft to be seen…in fact his website is now live here.

…every time i capture a moment…its timeless…it is forever…it is like a light that cannon be contained…we are these visual servants that have been behind the camera.  Doing this work on a daily basis…

John H. White, Pultizer Prize Winning Photojournalist

His words to the “why” of his craft are humbling as i still consider myself to be an avid photojournalist…and am grateful that my facebook and blog give me the ability to tell stories.  One of many reasons why I’m glad to be heading to Kenya in a few short days.  From the Venture Present Hope tour to leverage awareness to tornado victims in Joplin and Tuscaloosa to the IJM Freedom Tour to bring awareness to human trafficking…now some 7,000 miles around the world from home to see how Compassion leverages their mission.    Like John H White…these three words motiviate me greatly…

…faith, focus, flight. “I’m faithful to my purpose, my mission, my assignment, my work, my dreams. I stay focused on what I’m doing and what’s important. And I keep in flight—I spread my wings and do it.”
